Hotel Saint George → Dragalevtsi Monastery

Кратко описание

A pleasant hiking route along the northern slopes of Vitosha, starting directly from Hotel Saint George and combining a walk in nature with a visit to Dragalevtsi Monastery.

From the hotel to Dragalevtsi Monastery

The route starts directly from the area of Hotel Saint George, located high above Simeonovo district in Vitosha Nature Park. From the very beginning, the hike enters a peaceful mountain setting, away from the noise of the city.

Unlike the routes towards the higher parts of Vitosha, this one does not include a long, steep ascent. The trail follows the slopes of the mountain more horizontally, with gentle climbs and descents alternating along the way.

This makes the route suitable for people who want a longer walk without taking on a serious climb towards the higher parts of Vitosha.

Alekovi Waterfalls

One of the most interesting natural landmarks along the route is Alekovi Waterfalls.

Located in a forested area on the northern slope of Vitosha, they are a natural stop on the way to Dragalevtsi Monastery. They are especially beautiful in spring and early summer, when there is more water.

The place is suitable for a short rest and photos, and passing by the waterfalls makes the route much more varied than an ordinary forest walk.

In wet weather, the sections around the water can be slippery, so comfortable hiking shoes are recommended.

Along the panoramic trail towards Dragalevtsi

After Alekovi Waterfalls, the route continues along forest trails in the direction of Dragalevtsi.

Along the way, you pass through typical Vitosha beech and mixed forests, small streams and open sections. The hike is relatively even and allows for a calm pace with short breaks.

The advantage of the route is that for much of the time you are in the forest, which makes it pleasant even on warmer summer days.

Dragalevtsi Monastery

The final point of the route is Dragalevtsi Monastery “Dormition of the Mother of God”, located among the forests of Vitosha above Dragalevtsi district.

The monastery is one of the important historical and spiritual sites around Sofia and is part of the so-called Sofia Holy Mount.

After the hike, you can take some time to visit the monastery and have a short rest before heading back to Hotel Saint George.

The return follows the same route. It is good to allow around 3 hours of active walking for the whole hike, or around 3 to 3.5 hours with a break at the monastery and Alekovi Waterfalls.

Who the route is suitable for

The route is a good choice for hotel guests who want to spend a few hours in nature without taking on a long or difficult mountain hike.

It is suitable for:

  • people with normal physical preparation;
  • couples and families;
  • guests who have half a day available;
  • nature and photography lovers;
  • visitors who want to combine a natural and cultural landmark.

For small children, the total distance of around 9 km and some uneven or slippery sections of the trail should be taken into account.

What you will see along the route

During the hike, you will pass through some of the most typical places in the lower part of Vitosha:

  • forest trails along the northern slopes of the mountain;
  • Alekovi Waterfalls;
  • small mountain streams;
  • quiet shaded sections in the forest;
  • Dragalevtsi Monastery;
  • beautiful natural views in the area between Simeonovo and Dragalevtsi.

Useful tips

Comfortable sports or hiking shoes are recommended, especially after rain, when some sections around the streams and waterfalls may be wet and slippery.

Bring enough water, and during the warmer months it is also a good idea to have protection from sun and insects.

In winter conditions or after heavy rain, the route can become significantly more difficult and the walking time may increase.

Before setting off, it is good to check the current weather forecast and mountain conditions.

A walk directly from Hotel Saint George

One of the great advantages of the route is that it starts directly from Hotel Saint George. There is no need to go down to Simeonovo, use a car or take public transport.

Just a few minutes after leaving the hotel, you are already in the nature of Vitosha.

The route to Dragalevtsi Monastery is an excellent choice for a half-day walk, combining forest, mountain trails, Alekovi Waterfalls and one of the most popular historical landmarks at the foot of Vitosha.
