Hotel Saint George → Bay Krastyo
A more active mountain route from Hotel Saint George towards the higher parts of Vitosha, with a steady ascent, peaceful forest sections and reaching the area of Bay Krastyo.
Ascent directly from the hotel
The route starts directly from Hotel Saint George and gradually gains elevation from the very first sections.
Unlike the route towards Dragalevtsi Monastery, which follows the northern slopes of the mountain more gently, here the direction is clearly upwards towards the inner part of Vitosha.
The distance to Bay Krastyo is around 3.2 km, but because of the nearly 400 metres of positive elevation gain, the hike requires more physical effort.
At a calm pace, it is good to allow around an hour and a half to an hour and 45 minutes for the ascent.
Along the forest trails of Vitosha
Most of the route passes through peaceful forest sections, typical for this part of Vitosha.
There is no single specific landmark that serves as the main goal along the way. The hike itself is the experience — the gradual ascent through the forest, the silence and the feeling that with each next section you are entering deeper into the mountain.
This is exactly what makes the route a good choice for people looking for a real mountain walk close to Sofia, rather than simply visiting a particular tourist landmark.
Bay Krastyo
After around 3.2 km, the route reaches the Bay Krastyo area, at approximately 1400 m above sea level.
This is a suitable place to rest after the ascent and a natural final point for a shorter hike from Hotel Saint George.
From here, you are already significantly higher in Vitosha, and the area can also serve as a starting point for other routes in the mountain.
After a short break, the return to the hotel follows the same route. Since most of the way back is downhill, it is usually completed faster than the ascent.
Who the route is suitable for
The route is suitable for:
- people with normal to good physical preparation;
- guests who want a more active walk;
- mountain hiking enthusiasts;
- people who have half a day available;
- hikers who want to gain a little more elevation without taking on a long route.
Because of the continuous ascent, we would describe it as moderate, despite the relatively short distance.
For small children, the route may be tiring, especially on the way up.
What to expect along the route
During the hike, you will mainly pass through:
- forest trails;
- shaded sections;
- a gradual and relatively constant ascent;
- the typical quiet atmosphere of the northern slopes of Vitosha;
- the higher parts of the mountain around Bay Krastyo.
This route relies less on individual landmarks and more on the feeling of the hike itself and the change in altitude and character of the mountain.
Useful tips
Hiking shoes or sturdy sports shoes are recommended.
Because of the elevation gain, it is good to bring enough water and maintain a calm, steady pace during the ascent.
After rain, some forest sections may be wet and slippery, and in cooler weather the temperature difference between the hotel and the Bay Krastyo area can be quite noticeable.
Before setting off, check the weather forecast and the conditions in the mountain.
A mountain hike from the hotel doorstep
One of the greatest advantages of the route is that it starts directly from Hotel Saint George.
There is no need to go down to the districts at the foot of Vitosha or travel by car to the starting point of the hike. You simply leave the hotel and begin the ascent directly towards the mountain.
In around three hours out and back, the route offers enough physical activity, tranquillity and time in nature without taking up the whole day.
After returning, you can continue the day with rest or lunch in the restaurant of Hotel Saint George.
